• When making a significant change in depth, remember that previously lightened extension hair may be missing the underlying warmth needed to support a darker result. Fill the hair when necessary to help prevent hollow, muddy or overly cool results.
• Use deposit-focused color and the lowest appropriate developer needed to achieve your result. Avoid unnecessary oxidative processing whenever possible.

JM Tip: Extension hair can absorb pigment quickly due to its previous processing. Watch your color visually rather than assuming it will process exactly like your client’s natural hair, and always let your strand test guide your final formula.

• Blonde JM Hair can be toned to refine warmth, cool the overall result or create a more customized match for your client.
• Because blonde extension hair has already undergone significant processing, approach toning gently. Use deposit-focused formulas and avoid unnecessarily strong developers or prolonged processing.
• Porous areas may grab tone more quickly or darker than expected, so always complete a strand test first and visually monitor the hair throughout processing.
• Don't put purple shampoo directly onto extension hair, even when wet it will deposit too much pigment on the blonde hair.

JM Tip: When possible, start with the JM shade closest to your desired tone and use toner for refinement rather than trying to dramatically shift the extension color.

• Rooting and lowlighting can be used to create additional depth and an even more customized blend with your client’s natural hair.
• When adding a root, make sure to saturate the color well and blend softly down. On K-Tips, keep color away from the keratin bond. When working with Slim Wefts, avoid unnecessary chemical exposure directly on the weft seam.
• When adding lowlights, remember that lighter extension hair may need underlying warmth replaced when significantly deepening the color. Strand test your formula first and monitor the hair throughout processing.

JM Tip: A little customization can go a long way. Whenever possible, use multiple JM shades to create your dimension first, then use custom color to perfect the blend.

JM Tip: When color matching, choose based on the lightest shade you need to preserve. It’s much safer to add depth, dimension or tone than to try to create additional lightness later.

• After any custom color service, rinse the extensions thoroughly and restore moisture with extension-safe, hydration-focused products. Avoid unnecessary protein-heavy, strengthening or reparative treatments, which can leave extension hair feeling dry or brittle.
• Follow with a moisturizing leave-in and heat protectant before drying. Make sure the hair, weft seams and K-tip bonds are completely dry before installation.

Remember, extension hair is real hair, and color can fade over time. Depending on the shade, products used, washing routine, heat styling and environmental exposure, your client may need a toner, gloss or color refresh at some point during their extension wear.

JM Tip: Set that expectation during the initial consultation. A color refresh during maintenance doesn’t necessarily mean something is wrong with the extensions. Just like your client’s natural hair color, customized extension color may need maintenance to stay looking its best.
